VDPMill

VDPMill is a complete production line for variable-data publishing: it merges customer records into personalized statements, policies, bills, and letters, and renders both very large batch print files — hundreds of thousands of pages in a single file — and singular large reports. Input is XML, or data extracted from a database or application; output is PDF, PostScript, or AFP. Solutions scale from a single IRen engine to a multi-machine formatting grid.

Key capabilities

VDPMill is built from four components that form a pipeline:

• Splitter — divides input XML into chunks for parallel processing. Fully configurable: split on content sequences (every 50th invoice, every 3,500th line item) or on custom split instructions embedded in the source.
• Formatter — controls a multi-threaded grid of IRen engines running across multiple machines, even across different networks. Servers are added or removed through administrative interfaces; the Formatter balances the load across them automatically.
• Customizer — a plug-in layer that modifies the formatted document stream before final output: custom PostScript comments, OMR marks, transpromo insertions, or barcoding based on page sequences. No custom PDF, PostScript, or AFP parsers to write or maintain.
• Generator — multi-threaded output generation that produces several formats simultaneously from the same internal document stream, avoiding lossy conversion from one output format to another.

Technical details

The Generator supports PDF, PostScript, AFP, XPS, PPML, SVG, and HTML. The formatting layer is powered by IRen engines, which run anywhere a Java Virtual Machine is available. VDPMill also handles dynamic and interactive PDF Forms.

Deployment and licensing

A base VDPMill package includes one CPU license of the IRen engine with PDF and PostScript output, plus two VisualXSL licenses for stylesheet design. Additional rendering capacity, output modules such as AFP, XPS, and PPML, and extra design seats can be added to fit your configuration.
