CloudFormatter

Document formatting as a web service

  • PDF

CloudFormatter is a complete, hosted installation of the RenderX formatting engine. Your application sends XML plus XSLT, or ready-made XSL-FO, to the CloudFormatter service and receives print-quality PDF in return. There is no engine to install, no server to size, and no rendering infrastructure to maintain — the formatting quality is the same as an on-premises RenderX deployment, because the same engine does the work.

Key capabilities

  • Accepts XML with an XSLT stylesheet or ready-made XSL-FO
  • The client-side library runs the XSL transformation if needed, collects every image referenced in the document, and bundles the job into a single web request
  • Results come back as a stream: write the PDF to disk, return it in a browser response, or hand it to the next step in your workflow
  • Works from authoring tools as well as application code — for example, formatting directly from the oXygen XML editor

Technical details

The client API is available for .NET/C# and communicates with the hosted service over SOAP. Because formatting runs on RenderX-hosted engines, the service provides a defined font set: the standard Adobe base fonts (Helvetica, Times, Courier, Symbol, ZapfDingbats) and common TrueType fonts such as Arial, Times New Roman, Verdana, and Calibri. Additional fonts can be added on request.

Deployment

There is none — that is the point. CloudFormatter fits teams that need on-demand PDF generation without operating a rendering tier: publishing previews, generated reports, correspondence, and documents produced from web applications. If your documents cannot leave your network, or you need PostScript and AFP output at print volume, run IRen or IRen InGrid on your own infrastructure instead.
